student accomodation fire supression

The Problem

Cooking food by deep-frying can be dangerous if something goes wrong. Around 16,000 domestic fires start every year when food is being deep fried, with around 3000 people a year being injured (ROSPA).

Multi-user kitchen environments, such as student accomodation, HMO’s, blocks of flats, or other multi-occupancy buildings can present a particular problem with regard to the risk of fires in their kitchens. Unattended or forgotten cooking activities can often be the most common reason fires start.

The sheer risk of deep-frying coupled with the persons inability and lack of fire education to deal with a fryer fire can be catastrophic.

Did you know:

  • Those living in rented or shared accommodation are seven times more likely to have a fire.
  • 55% of 18-24 year old fire-related deaths, occurred through the misuse of cooking appliances and careless handling of hot substances.
  • Over the last 5 years, cigarettes, smoking materials and candles have been the cause of 1,500 18-24 year old injuries.

What can we do to help reduce the risk of death and damange caused by fires?

As a UK Leading Fire Protection company, we are well aware of the risks that can cause fires. We’re also best placed to be able to protect people and properties against them.

We recently undertook a huge student accomodation project in which we designed, supplied and installed kitchen fire suppression systems in a student accomodation block of 46 flats. We also provide maintenance for the fire suppression systems. The images below show our installation of the kitchen suppression system.

What is a kitchen fire suppression unit and how does it work?

A kitchen fire suppression unit is a fire suppression system that puts out fires in kitchens using a wet chemical (not water).  In the event of a fire, the detection tube will rupture once at a certain temperature, this will then pneumatically activate the small 2kg Novec1230 cylinder and suppress the fire through a nozzle above the cooker hood.

This fire suppression solution is not powered by electricity and is ready to act 24/7/365 days a year in the event of a fire.

Will it need a top up/call out to replace? And do Cannon Fire Protection do this service?

Yes, once activated the cylinder will need to be replaced aswell as the detection tubing, this is something we can do, we can also maintain these systems, ensuring that they’re in working order and will activate in the event of a fire.

What was Cannon Fire Protection’s role in the Student Accomodation project?

We designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the kitchen fire suppression systems for 46 bedrooms in the building.
