Water Mist
Applications
What is a water mist system?
A water mist system is a fire protection system which utilises water, high pressure and specialized sprinkler spray heads to form very fine water droplets, ranging from 50 to 300µm depending on the system design.
This increases the overall surface area of the water being deployed and such, much smaller supply quantities of water are required in comparison to a standard sprinkler system.
How Water Mist Suppression works ?
These small, atomized water droplets allow the water mist to suppress fires by:
- Cooling both flames and gases through water evaporation
- Reducing Oxygen levels through water evaporation
- Reduces radiant heat through heat absorption by the water droplets themselves
The effectiveness of a water mist system in fire suppression depends on its spray characteristics, which include the droplet size, distribution, flux density (i.e. electric or magnetic forces) and spray dynamics, in relationship to the fire scenario.
Advantages
The use of water mist fire suppression, when compared to the use of gaseous agents and traditional sprinkler systems, has the following advantages:
- Immediate activation
- High efficiency in the suppression of a wide variety of fire types
- Minimized water damage
- Environmentally sound characteristics
- No toxic issues
More about Water Mist Suppression
So efficient is today’s water mist technology, it is even possible to protect IT data rooms and other electronic facilities with a water mist agent without risk to the electronics equipment within. Room sealing is not an issue and annual Room Integrity Testing is not required. Water mist systems are typically fed by tank and pump or cylinder-based arrangements.
Here to help
All of Cannon Fire’s Water Mist suppression systems are designed, installed, commissioned and maintained under the requirements of BS 8458:2015, BS 8489-1:2016 and BS 8489-7:2016.
